How To Cook Steak Perfectly On The Stove – Ribeye And Cabernet

Okay, I started out the week in a bit of a panic. We were getting together with friends on Friday night for a steak and wine dinner. Sounds great right? There was just one problem. We were hosting and I was in charge of cooking. Now normally this wouldn’t be a problem, but when it comes to making steak I’ll admit, I’m not very good. So I did a little research on how to cook steak and I am excited to share the results!

Now due to the current weather situation where I live, grilling outdoors was not an option. If you need further proof check out the photo below. Somewhere under the white blanket is our deck and my poor little grill is just sitting there wondering when it will get used again.

How to cook steak on the stove and make it delicious!

The inspiration for making this came from Gordon Ramsay’s How to Cook the Perfect Steak. See the video below. This recipe was extremely simple with very little ingredients. However, I was a little timid because I have not really cooked steak on the stove before. But after trying this recipe I am telling you, I think I have my new favorite thing to make. It was delicious and after only one time I am confident I can cook steak for anybody!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ribeye Steak – I went to a local grocery store and bought some nice thick cuts that were fresh behind the counter in the meat department.
  • Salt – I used coarse kosher salt
  • Pepper – fresh ground is best, but just use what you have
  • Olive Oil
  • Butter
  • Rosemary
  • (3) garlic cloves

As you can see the steaks have been seasoned and are coming up to room temperature. In the background, you will see a couple of delicious Cabernet Sauvignons from our wonderful wine club and a very nice meat and cheese platter that our friends so kindly brought with them.

Basically, I just followed the video above and it turned out awesome! If I had an accent as cool as Gordon Ramsay’s I would have done the video myself. But for now, my Minnesota accent and I will stick to the typing.

Start by giving a good coat of salt and pepper on each side of the steak. Let sit for 20 minutes at room temperature, so you aren’t putting a cold steak in the pan. This helps cook the steak evenly.

Add olive oil to the pan and get it good and hot. Once the pan is ready, add the steak and you should hear that nice searing noise. Now it all depends on the thickness of your steak. I actually pulled the timer out on my phone and flipped them every two minutes. After the first flip is when I added the butter, lightly crushed garlic and the rosemary. I used a spoon and scooped the butter over the steak on a regular basis and made sure the garlic and rosemary maintained contact. Continue to add butter as needed to prevent burning on the bottom of the pan.

I flipped the steaks about six different times. So each side had approximately three rounds of cooking at two minutes per round. After you get the searing effect on each side you will want to turn your heat down to medium to medium-high. Just make sure the bottom of the pan isn’t burning.

When the steaks are done to your liking, pull them out and let them rest a good ten minutes before slicing them up. My goal was to get these medium to medium rare and that’s exactly what happened! When I cut these up, the ends were a nice medium, while the middle was medium-rare. Yes, I can now cook steak perfectly at home! It was easily the best steak outside of an expensive Steakhouse I have ever had. The red wine we paired with it brought the flavors to a whole new level…..and now about that wine!

Another Fine Wine from Our Amazing Wine of the Month Club!

The wine I wanted to feature with this event was a Cabernet from Lazy Lab Vineyards as shown above. These fine wines come to our door each and every month from our wine club. If you don’t know about this yet, with our wine of the month club you can try fine wine from the world’s finest wineries at member pricing. These wines typically come from some of the best vineyards in Sonoma and Napa Valley!

Depending on your monthly order, the prices range anywhere from $0 – $25 per bottle. Yes, that is a zero. If you refer three customers into this wine club your wine becomes free every month forever, as long as they stay active.

So, you could literally get four bottles of fine wine shipped to your door for free every single month. This comes out to forty-eight bottles of wine per year – free! If you bought wine of this caliber at the store it would easily cost you $40 – $125 per bottle if not more. So if we use the low end of that cost you could receive about $1,920 of free wine every year!

This wine is beyond good and you will begin to develop a new appreciation for fine wine. It is so much better than the mass-produced wine that you get at the store for $8 a bottle. It’s not even wine, I like to call it alcoholic fruit juice. I am sorry if that offends you, I am by no means a wine snob, but the winemaking process is delicate and takes time. You can’t cheapen it and there is no way you can get a quality product at those low prices.

In fact, I did an entire article on fine wine versus mass-produced wine

For this current event, we had some very close friends over on a Friday night. Sometimes Friday evenings can be hard to get together. Especially as you get older, most of us don’t feel like going anywhere after we get home from a long week of work.

However, if you can get past the urge to stay in, there is something kind of cool about a Friday night get together. It’s such a great feeling to laugh and unwind with good friends knowing you still have the whole weekend in front of you.

That’s exactly what we did here. You see, it’s more than just food and wine. This is also about creating an experience where you can have good conversation and talk about what’s going on in each other’s lives. It’s about watching the kids play together and laughing at the funny things they do.

It’s about reconnecting with old friends or discovering new friends. Furthermore, it’s about learning something new. In this case, I learned how to cook steak perfectly on the stove. I would not have tried if we weren’t having this event. Consequently, all of these things become so much more enjoyable over a bottle or two…..or three of incredible wine and great food!

We started doing these wine events at our home in November of 2018. It has exceeded my expectations. We are having so much fun with this and can’t wait to do more. If you are interested in trying some fine wine feel free to reach out to me! We would love to have you over and pair some food and fine wine from California’s finest regions! I promise we will have a great time!
