Fine Wine Versus Mass Produced Wine

Have you ever been at a restaurant or browsing the wine aisle and wondered what the difference is between a fine wine versus mass-produced wine? Well, I have often wondered that myself and after looking into it, I have been fascinated by the results. As it turns out not all wines are created equally, not even close.

For many years I didn’t seem to care that much about the quality of the wine I was going to purchase. All wines tasted pretty much the same to me. Why spend $40 on a bottle of wine when I get a bottle for $6. There are a few reasons actually. One of them will become very obvious in the morning when you are reaching for the bottle of Tylenol. Yes, a bad headache is one reason why you should drink a fine wine versus mass-produced wine.

As I got older, I started to worry about some of the chemicals and impurities I put in my body. After doing some research I found that mass-produced wine uses nasty chemicals to speed up the wine-making process. Put taste aside for a moment and answer this question. Would you rather consume something handcrafted in a privately owned vineyard or something mass-produced in a factory?

Fine Wine Versus Mass-Produced Wine

Mass Production

It all starts with the grapes. With mass-produced wine you are going to get large amounts of machined harvested grapes that will all end up in the finished product. Due to the volume and machinery involved, these grapes simply won’t get the same care or inspection that grapes in fine wines get. To compensate for the lower quality of grapes they add preservatives and additives to make the wine taste better.

Think of it this way. Let’s say you want to make a delicious homemade strawberry-banana smoothie. In the first smoothie, you use premium, perfectly ripened fruit. In the second smoothie, you use low-quality fruit. The strawberries are bitter and the bananas are too soft and over-ripened. Now if you add lots of extra sugar and some artificial flavoring you could probably make that second smoothie taste very close to the first.

Eli Whitney the American inventor introduced mass production in 1798 for weapon production. Perhaps the most well-known figure of mass production was Henry Ford, who in 1913 introduced the assembly line to mass-produce tractors and automobiles. All of this is very good when it comes to all of the products we need in everyday life, but to me, wine is a form of art. Wine is not something that should be cheapened by an accelerated fermenting process with additives and preservatives.

Fine Hand Made Wine

So why is fine wine versus mass-produced wine better? In contrast to the above methods of harvesting, grapes from fine wines are handpicked and carefully sorted. Bad grapes just aren’t going to be included in the finished product. Good grapes cost money, which is why good wine is more expensive. Furthermore, the wine is going to be carefully crafted by winemakers at the Vineyard, not at the factory. This is one of the huge differences between a fine wine versus mass-produced wine.

I prefer to have my wine made at a winery, not in a factory where flavor scientists have fooled us into thinking the cheap wine they are selling is authentic. Sure the price seems good upfront when you can buy a bottle of wine for two or three dollars. If you go to the store you can barely buy a bottle of water for that price. Which begs the question of how can it only cost that much? Now I know that just because something costs more does not automatically mean it is better, but I do believe with wine you get what you pay for. Mass-produced wine is basically alcoholic fruit juice.

Impress Others With Your Taste

Let’s just say you don’t care about the quality of wine you drink. In addition, fine wine does not impress you. Maybe you think this fine wine stuff is pretentious and snobby. That’s okay, you are entitled to an opinion, however, you should know there are many others out there who have an opposite viewpoint. People you know, people you see and interact with every day.

Imagine being in this situation. Your boss is hosting an office party at her house. You decide to show up with a bottle of wine. Your boss enjoys the finer things in life. She opens up the bottle in front of you and pours it into some glasses. She hands out the poured glasses to some of the guests and then puts the glass up to her mouth. The next few seconds are going to tell your boss a lot about you. She is either going to remember you as someone who is classy and cares about the details or a sap that shows up to her party with a $3 bottle of cheap wine. In that moment how do you want to be remembered? What would you bring to the party?

If it were me I would reach into my stash from my Wine Club and grab a bottle of premium red or white. If I really wanted to impress people I might bring both because everyone has different preferences. The only reason you have this wine in your possession is that you are a member of this club and get these rare premium wines shipped directly to your door. How impressed would your boss be if you showed up to a work event with a fine wine that you can’t get in the store?

Great Gifts

The above scenario is just one example of how THIS WINE CLUB can benefit you. Even if you aren’t a huge wine drinker chances are you know a lot of wine drinkers. Do you know what wine drinkers love getting for gifts? Drum-roll please…… WINE. Make a lasting impression and show them how much you care with the gift of a premium fine wine. Think of the possibilities with all of the parties and gatherings over the year when you could bring a bottle of wine. It doesn’t get any easier than having the wine picked and sent to you. Here are several examples when the gift of wine would be helpful in your life, Christmas gifts, Birthday gifts, Anniversary gifts, Housewarming parties, Office parties, or just show a loved one you care. The list could go on and on but you get the idea.

How do I get started?

I hope I was able to help you see that fine wine versus mass-produced wine is not the same. The wine-making process is very delicate. The next time you reach for that $3 bottle of factory wine, pause and remember why it only costs $3.
