When thinking of United States Mountain Ranges, the Rocky Mountains are the first thing that comes to my mind. Usually referred to as “The Rockies” this major mountain range stretches from northern Canada all the way to New Mexico covering more than 3,000 miles of real estate.
The Rocky Mountains are home to some of America’s best mountain towns such as Aspen, Boulder, Estes Park. They are also home to the most nostalgic American summer getaways which include Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park, Grand Teton National Park, etc. If you ever do this you will fall in love and you will want to make it a tradition as so many families do.
Appalachian Mountains:
Extending from central Alabama to the Canadian Island of Newfoundland this mountain range is not only the oldest in the United States, it is one of the oldest mountain ranges on Earth. There is no shortage of places to visit either.
Some of the most popular spots along this range are The Great Smoky Mountains, Shenandoah National Park and Mount Washington. If you are a true adventurer and have roughly six months to spare you might try hiking the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. This trail is not for the faint of heart as it spans over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine, covering fourteen states.
Sierra Nevada:
In comparison to the Rockies and Appalachians, these mountains are relatively small in length. Most of the range is in California with a little running into Nevada. Don’t let the size fool you though. The Sierra Nevada’s are fascinating in so many other ways.
One of the facts I find most interesting about these mountains is that it is home to the tallest peak in the continental United States. Standing at 14,505 feet Mount Whitney is an impressive sight! However, what really gets my attention is that less than 100 miles away is Death Valley, which is the lowest point in North America. What amazing contrast from high to low in less than a two-hour drive!
The Sierra Nevada’s are home to some of the nations and the world’s most popular tourist attractions. Included in this is Yosemite National Park, Mount Whitney, Lake Tahoe and Sequoia National Park. These are just a few of the major attractions, but I could go on and on.
