Building a new deck is an exciting process, but it can also be somewhat scary. I know this from first-hand experience because my wife and I went through this in the spring of 2017. When we started to research companies we were surprised at how little information there was on local deck builders. After calling around a bit we were able to book an appointment with someone to come to our house and look at our project.
Minnesota Decks – Custom Deck Builders
The company we found was Minnesota Decks and our experience with them was delightful! When John and Karri came to our house we were instantly impressed by their passion for their craft and their warmth as people. We felt like we were sitting down with old friends. It didn’t take long after talking with them that we knew we had the right people for the job and we didn’t need to look for deck builders any further.
When it came time to discuss the design and price they were able to quickly draw something up and produce a total cost. With two little kids and both of us working full-time it was very important for us to get everything taken care of in one meeting. In about an hour we were able to create the design, choose the material, get the total cost of the project and schedule the date of construction. GO HERE if you wish to go directly to their website.
Choosing the correct decking and railing material
Decking: This is a step you want to take very seriously. I wasn’t exactly sure what material we wanted, but there was one thing I knew for sure, I wanted it to be maintenance-free. Over the years, I have watched too many people spend multiple weekends during the summer pressure washing and staining their deck. I had absolutely no interest in doing that every two to three years.
The expertise of Minnesota Decks showed us a product they use for the decking called – Trex Transcend Composite Decking. Trex is a maintenance-free, Eco-friendly, composite decking material. This material will not fade, stain, crack or split. In addition, Trex is resistant to termites, mildew and is completely splinter-free. This is important to me, especially with little feet running around on it. The photo is an example of the decking material and color we chose – Island Mist.
The benefits of using Trex Transcend for you decking material!
- Incredibly high durability – Trex’s decking remains beautiful even after years in the elements like sun, rain, sleet, snow, and ice.
- Limited 25-Year warranty – When your spending hard-earned money on a deck it’s important to know the manufacturer will stand behind its product should something go awry.
- Low maintenance – Patented shell design will clean up easily using just soap and water. No need for harmful chemicals.
- 95% of the decking is recycled materials – Less trash in the landfills and more trees in the forests, win-win!
There are even more benefits to using this material. Trex Transcend has a hidden fastener system. There are no visible screws on our deck. In addition to not having visible screws, we also don’t have any seams. MN Decks had the forethought to tell us if we extended our design to twenty feet in width they could order a twenty-foot decking board which would make the deck seamless.
Railing: The railing system we decided to go with was black aluminum railing. Aluminum railing is not going to rust or fade and will not need any maintenance besides routine cleaning. In addition, we also added some low voltage lighting to the railing and stairs which compliments the deck nicely. At night, this really brings the deck to life and is an extremely affordable addition.
Something to think about
There is a lot to consider when you are building a deck on your home. For the time being, let’s take cost out of the equation. Anyone that has ever been around kids knows that things tend to get spilled during meals. It would be hard to make it through a summer without a hamburger or hot-dog full of ketchup and mustard falling onto your deck. Perhaps some Diet Coke or a glass of red wine spills occasionally. Take a peek at the fun little video below. You will see just one of the many benefits of choosing a composite decking material like Trex.
Deck / Patio Combo
In closing, I would just like to say that there are few things more enjoyable than spending time out on the back deck or patio on a beautiful summer night. Whether you are seeking solitude by yourself, spending quality time with your family or having the neighbors over, your backyard is a fantastic gathering place no matter what the occasion or season.
If you are looking to add a deck/patio combination MN Decks partners with Giestone. for anything concrete related. There are many patio and deck builders out there but these two are elite. We used both companies on our projects so I know first hand. Trust me I would not have taken the time to write about them if I wasn’t so impressed with the results. We couldn’t be happier with our Giestone built patio and deck built by MN Decks.
